Adult ADHD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a widely recognized neurodevelopmental condition, with research indicating that approximately 2.8% of adults worldwide experience ADHD. Despite its common association with childhood, many do not realize that ADHD frequently persists into adulthood.

ADHD involves specific developmental differences in the brain, and although symptoms can evolve over time, they often continue into adult life. The misconception that one can “grow out of it” leads many adults to overlook the need for treatment, sometimes unaware that they are living with ADHD.

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a developmental disorder marked by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Individuals with ADHD may predominantly display inattentive traits, hyperactive symptoms, or, more commonly, a combination of both. Persistent symptoms can disrupt daily activities and hinder personal growth.

Aspects of inattention include:

Wandering off task
Struggling to complete tasks
Organizational difficulties

Hyperactivity is the most visible manifestation of the disorder.

People exhibit hyperactive behaviors such as:

Fidgeting
Tapping
Talkativeness

Adults with ADHD often display reduced inhibition relative to their peers. They are more susceptible to distractions, whether from spontaneous thoughts or appealing diversions, frequently redirecting their focus away from current tasks. This behavior pattern is known as impulsivity, defined by acting spontaneously without prior reflection. Managing impulses is a crucial area of focus in treating all forms of ADHD.

The intensity of ADHD symptoms can vary with age and context. For instance, hyperactivity is typically most prominent in early childhood, while issues with inattention usually become evident during elementary and middle school years. In adults, hyperactivity may manifest more subtly as fidgeting, or as feelings of restlessness and impatience. The presentation of ADHD symptoms can also change based on different environments and situations.

Temporary methods to alleviate ADHD symptoms include:

Close monitoring
Novel settings
Engaging activities
Frequent rewards for behavior

Living With ADHD

If teachers and families do not identify ADHD during childhood, individuals might not receive a diagnosis until adulthood. They may have a mild version of the disorder or may have managed their symptoms effectively until more complex adult responsibilities, particularly in the workplace, exacerbate their condition. Additionally, adult students with undiagnosed ADHD often face challenges in college due to the intense concentration required for academic success.

At Sacramento Mental Health, we recognize that individuals with ADHD often possess remarkable intelligence and exceptional creative abilities. Many are successful entrepreneurs, flourishing when they can set their own rules and manage their own time. However, achieving such success typically comes after they have learned to leverage their unique talents and developed effective strategies to navigate the challenges associated with their condition.

Those who remain untreated often struggle to fully realize their potential as the symptoms of ADHD make achieving their goals extremely challenging. This condition poses significant hurdles in managing both personal and professional lives. Furthermore, many adults with ADHD may not realize they have the disorder. Instead, they might interpret their symptoms as personal shortcomings rather than cognitive differences. Common struggles for those with ADHD include maintaining organization, punctuality, and consistent employment. Routine tasks like waking up on time, preparing for the day, getting to work, and remaining productive can be daunting for adults with undiagnosed ADHD.

These adults may have experienced continual issues in educational settings, careers, and relationships. They often exhibit impatience and try to do multiple things at once, usually with less success. A tendency towards immediate gratification, rather than working towards long-term rewards, can also be prevalent due to their lowered inhibition.

Inattention is a key symptom of ADHD, manifesting in adults as:

  • Missing details and making careless errors in various settings
  • Difficulty maintaining focus during tasks, conversations, or readings
  • Seeming inattentive
  • Failing to follow through on instructions
  • Starting projects but quickly losing focus and getting sidetracked
  • Struggling with organizing tasks and managing time, leading to messy workspaces and missed deadlines
  • Avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort
  • Misplacing essential items like keys, paperwork, or personal items
  • Being easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
  • Forgetting daily responsibilities

In adults, hyperactivity might appear differently than in children but remains a significant challenge. Signs of hyperactivity include:

  • Fidgeting or difficulty staying seated
  • Excessive talking or interrupting
  • Feeling restless
  • Quick to frustration or anger
  • Fidgeting with or manipulating objects

Untreated ADHD can result in continuous frustration, self-blame, and feelings of guilt for failing to meet expectations. This can exacerbate other co-occurring conditions such as depression and anxiety, with symptoms that may overlap and intensify each other. Adults with ADHD and mood disorders may struggle with mood regulation, motivation, and maintaining healthy sleep patterns. Additionally, untreated ADHD can lead to substance use disorders as individuals seek ways to manage their symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or mood disturbances.

At Sacramento Mental Health, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive support and treatment for ADHD, aiming to enhance the quality of life for our clients by addressing these complex challenges.

Treating ADHD

While ADHD is not curable, it is highly treatable with appropriate resources and care. For adults, typical treatment often involves a combination of medication and psychosocial interventions. Prescription stimulants, along with certain non-stimulant medications, are effective in managing key symptoms such as inattentiveness and impulsivity.

Incorporating behavioral therapy, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), into the treatment regimen can significantly enhance outcomes for adults with ADHD. CBT aids individuals by increasing awareness of their symptoms and equipping them with practical coping strategies.

At Sacramento Mental Health, we emphasize the importance of personalized treatment plans that allow for measurable progress at a pace comfortable for each client. Our highly skilled professionals work closely with clients to develop and hone new skills aimed at improving organization, memory, and focus.
