Bipolar disorder, a significant mood disorder, is characterized by intense shifts in mood, energy levels, and the ability to perform daily tasks. These shifts, commonly known as “mood swings,” alternate between manic and depressive episodes, impacting a person’s daily life significantly. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 2.8% of U.S. adults experience bipolar disorder annually, with around 4.4% encountering it at some point in their lives.

As a chronic condition, bipolar disorder may worsen over time without appropriate intervention. Early and effective treatment is crucial in managing this disorder. At Sacramento Mental Health, we provide comprehensive care that includes medication management, psychotherapy, patient education, robust support systems, and self-management strategies to help individuals live better with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder (previously known as manic-depressive illness or manic depression) is a psychiatric disorder that produces significant fluctuations in mood, energy, activity levels, attention, and the capacity to carry out everyday duties. These temporary shifts in mood can last anywhere from a few hours to months or years. Personality changes often accompany reduced inhibition that can lead to strained relationships and work performance. Stabilizing the “swing” of these emotions is the goal of treatment for bipolar disorders.

Bipolar disorders come in three different forms: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder.

Each form involves changes in mood, vitality, and energy. Mood swings can range from times of excessive “up” behavior (known as manic episodes) to periods of intense “down” times (known as depressive episodes).

Manic Episodes

These are periods of heightened euphoria, overactivity, and impulsiveness. While these can lead to engaging in risky behaviors, such as unchecked spending or reckless driving, hypomanic episodes are less intense and may allow for more normal functioning.

Depressive Episodes

These can vary in intensity but are generally more prolonged than manic episodes. They significantly affect how individuals cope with daily tasks and their overall emotional state.

Bipolar disorder manifests in several forms: Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Cyclothymic Disorder. Each type involves fluctuations in mood, energy, and activity levels:

  • Bipolar I Disorder is marked by manic episodes lasting at least a week or severe manic symptoms that necessitate immediate hospital care. Depressive episodes typically last two weeks or more.
  • Bipolar II Disorder involves patterns of depressive and hypomanic episodes, without the full-blown manic episodes typical of Bipolar I.
  • Cyclothymic Disorder or Cyclothymia features periods of hypomania and mild depressive symptoms lasting two years or more, though these do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for hypomanic or depressive episodes.

Individuals with bipolar disorder often experience significant emotional fluctuations, variations in sleep patterns and activity levels, and may exhibit unusual behaviors, typically without recognizing these changes themselves. The mood swings associated with bipolar disorder are distinctively different from the person’s normal moods and behaviors, and these episodes can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

Even when symptoms appear mild, they may indicate the presence of bipolar disorder. For instance, those with Bipolar II Disorder often experience hypomania. During hypomanic episodes, individuals might feel well enough to manage daily tasks and maintain their routine. However, even if the person feels nothing is amiss, friends and family might notice mood or behavioral changes that could signify bipolar disorder. Without appropriate treatment, those experiencing hypomanic or depressive episodes are at risk of developing more severe manic or depressive states.

It’s crucial to discuss any mental health concerns with a healthcare provider. A medical professional can conduct tests to eliminate other potential causes and begin the process of making an accurate diagnosis.
